Tetris Didn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification May Address This Issue

Whenever a prominent awards ceremony draws close, there’s always a clamor for the addition fresh award types to honor underappreciated efforts and delight the hearts of followers dedicated to specific genres.

A fellow writer has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. Equally deserving are board games, which is a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front since similar to single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal remains most pressing and important of all. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and inevitably start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason cinema institutions don’t do it. However, it represents a necessary evil for the industry of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies presently include award types recognizing Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these six categories effectively encompass numerous genres, making space possible for numerous titles.

Not so for logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists to put them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles of one title, intense tile-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. What category would fit them within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens outstanding logic titles published annually that have no home at major award shows, if they accidentally match award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated completely during that awards season
  • A different innovative game received no nominations that year
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games barely qualified for independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often compact experiences, yet the craft in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most engaged experiences in the world and have been for over a decade.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges famous sandbox experiences for the title of best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and engaging across multiple categories.

The Solution and Justification

Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these represent titles without proper classification at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers function at the demanding boundary of video game design, developing some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay decades.
