A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the pace and execution of the country's key government projects.
The accident happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We will meticulously determine the reasons behind this incident,” affirmed the head of state.
The president announced that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The leader stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the former leader, whose presidency ended the prior year. This venture was closely associated with his leadership's strategic agenda for the southern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The building of both railway systems was overseen by the armed forces, marking a notable growth of its role in civilian projects. They were built at an rapid speed, surpassing predictions to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had also raised persistent apprehensions over safety standards.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an earlier collision this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a key rival party called for an immediate halt in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was suggested while awaiting a thorough independent investigation. The party declared that the situation "demands swift accountability."
In response, the head of state maintained that the train had been operating in full accordance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these national undertakings.
